Poverty Point is a state park in a man-made lake west of the Mississippi River. Just a few campers in the campground. The quiet place is in a bear habitat. This is the land of the Louisiana black bear, which differ from others black bear by their bigger molars and a longer and narrower skull.

The Marsden Mounds are at the shores of the Bayou Macon. They are roughly 3,500 years old. There are five earthworks and not much is known about the builders - the Poverty Point Culture

Upriver and outside the park is the Poverty Point World Heritage Site with the biggest earthworks. Dated between 1700 - 1100 BC, they are older than Rome and the Mayan pyramids. The ancient setting was abandoned for unknown reasons. Old mysteries.

This park is roughly 30 miles west from Vicksburg National Military Park and there are nice cabins for rental on the lake.
