The Timeless Relics of Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument

The amazing Big Stump fossil of Florissant - imagine how tall was this tree. I visited in the fall of 2025.   

Visitor Center closed because of the political turmoil in Washington - government shutdown. I hiked into the national monument from the Hornbek Homestead trailhead - check next post. All ended being better. Stunning fossils of redwood ~34 million years old. A big lake once covered this area. Over five miles hiked adding the loop that climbs up across the road. Awesome views from up there. Arrived in a cold and foggy day; left under clear skies. Typical fall weather in the Colorado mountains.
