Agathlan: El Capitán of Arizona

Black and white photo of the Agathlan or Agathla Peak taken in the fall.
Agathlan or Agathla Peak in northern Arizona.

Strange peak that rises alone over the surrounding lands of the Navajo Reservation. This ancient volcanic plug is a sacred mountain for the Navajo. The Spaniards called it El Capitán. "Agathlan" comes from a Navajo word meaning "piles of wool". Wild and sharp peak.
